It's very interesting to me how different your experience is than mine in so many ways. I think it's probably due to the difference in our partners. You did better.

Nope. I figured it out all on my own.

I need to sched another trip to go to Hoi An . I think I may just do a winter there, I have contacted a few hotels and they are more than happy with long stayers. I can test how it feels! Will be in touch then....

Hoi An is great. ...A half hour away from Da Nang so you can get almost anything you need for a long term stay. December to March in that area is wonderful.

Jeez Brian you are making a REALLY compelling case for me selling up and moving-I wouldn't pick Hanoi though cos way too cold! How is the paperwork for moving?I had a foot operation in France many years ago and it was done by a smiling vietnamese surgeon...incredible work done fast and with minimal fuss. I will always remember that

Permanent immigration is impossible. Most people do visa runs, where they travel every few months to renew their visa. Vietnamese immigration has just restored the 90 day travel visa, so they are becoming more friendly to expats again. Vietnam used to have a 1 year multiple entry visa which was popular among undocumented English teachers. There are much easier countries to live in permanently.

A couple friends of mine enjoy a multi-country retirement where they spend part of the year in Vietnam, part of the year in their home country and maybe part of the year in Latin America. They basically follow the good weather. If you are really serious about this, let me know and I can answer some specific questions.
