I'm curious since you grew up in SoCal, did your Vietnamese American friends (or their families) ever express hostility towards the idea of you moving to communist Vietnam? I grew up in NoVa, and the Vietnamese community in the area sticks with the RVN flag
I don't remember any hostility. Many came well after the 1990's and find it a little funny I would want to move to the country they moved from. One time I was corrected for calling Saigon Ho Chi Minh City because they still prefer the older name. They were younger and I asked them if they had ever been to Vietnam and they said no.
